Pakistan Open Knowledge Foundation (POKF), a non-profit organization has launched the first English to Urdu dictionary which will vastly help the millions of speakers of the wonderful language still awaiting a breakthrough of this kind. The dictionary can be viewed online whereas it can also be downloaded.

The project is a brainchild of two entrepreneurs, Ali Mozaffar Jafry and Azad Qalamdar, who teamed up for POKF for the project. They have made use of Lingoes, a dictionary and text translation software which offers lookup dictionaries, full text translation, captures words on screen and translates selected text and pronunciation of words in 80 different languages.

POKF’s main objective is to develop and promote free educational resources and applications to Pakistani users, starting with the Lingoes Translator.

The website, which has been launched in 2009 can be reached at www.lingoes.pk The website has served more than 30,000 plus unique visitors from over 80 different countries, 90,000 plus page views and an estimated 12,000 downloads.

After the successful launch of this project, POKF is working on an Urdu-English dictionary on the same platform. Yet another project they are working on is an Urdu plug-in for the Google Translate Engine, which will offer full page machine translation of pages in English to Urdu.

The duo is also working to develop online dictionaries for regional languages such as Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi.
