The mother of all game desks

by Usman Kakakhel on September 2, 2010

in Computer Games, Entertainment

Japanese companies have historically employed a distinctive nomenclature in their game products.

But with the “Roccaforte,” they hit it spot-on. We have no idea what the name means, but to us it conjures images of something formidable or even gargantuan–both adjectives that can describe this monstrous game station, which can apparently accommodate three monitors, at least two joysticks and all manner of peripherals. iPad The True Choice For Sumo Wrestlers

by Usman Kakakhel on September 1, 2010

in Apple, Technology

Japan’s ancient sport of sumo is embracing the latest high-tech, with its governing body set to distribute Apple’s iPad to wrestlers who often struggle with smaller cellphone keypads due to their giant hands.

The sumo association said it will hand out iPads to Japan’s 51 “stables”, or the clubs the wrestlers belong to, with the aim of improving communication among the roly-poly grapplers after some in the past had missed information sent by fax or telephone. Read more

Google Takes on Skype with new Service

by Adnan Khan on August 27, 2010

in Google, Technology

Google, as a part of its expansion strategy, has introduced a brand new service termed Google Call. By announcing the service, they are potentially attacking Skype. Although the service has just been launched, and is offered nowhere but the US and Canada, calls till the end of the year are absolutely free, yeah that’s right, free. Free calls for three whole months within the US and Canada, and those are calls on phones and cell phones from one’s computer.

Everyone in the US and Canada will throwtheir phones away for at least three months because now they could call their friends and relatives within the US and Canada for free -  all they need is a computer with a microphone and speakers or a headset, and Google’s voice and chat plug-in that they advertise when a user is about to install Google Talk. With his business shirt, black tie and blue tinted shades, Sylvester Stallone looks more like a hipster movie executive than a battle-worn bruiser on a deadly mission in South America.

But beneath that shirt are the muscles he first revealed in ”Rocky,” and behind those eyes is the grit that got his breakthrough movie made back in 1976. At 64, Stallone is still a tough guy, and he aims to prove it alongside a cast of killer comrades in ”The Expendables,” which opens Friday. Read more

iMac the next touch-screen Apple device?

by Usman Kakakhel on August 24, 2010

in Apple, Technology

Apple’s put a touch interface on so many of its other products, could an iMac be next?

If a patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is any indication, the answer is possibly yes. Patently Apple, a blog that keeps tabs on Apple’s USPTO filings, noticed an application on Monday that depicts a hinged-screen version of Apple’s iMac desktop that has a touch-sensitive screen. The hinge appears to allow the computer to alternate between a traditional vertical desktop configuration and a flat, iPad-like surface when rocked back on its hinge.

Because this would be a desktop computer and a touch-screen device at the same time, it appears the user can choose whether to use the touch-focused iOS operation system from the iPhone and iPad, or the traditional Mac OSX desktop operating system. Moving between the OSes, according to the application, would be activated by touching specific areas of the iMac’s screen. Read more

HumanCar creates a real muscle car

by Usman Kakakhel on August 24, 2010

in Alternative Energy, Automobiles

The brainchild of US engineer Charles Greenwood, the car is operated by up to four hand cranks. The idea is driver and passengers pull and push levers — reminiscent of an exercise rowing machine or the railway handcar thingies you see in cartoons — to produce energy which turns the wheels. Early reports that holes in the floor let you push with your feet proved wide of the mark.

The vehicle can be powered by just one or two people, as you’ll see in the embedded video below, though this can be pretty tiring after a while. Luckily, it can be turned into a hybrid by connecting auxiliary power systems such as a battery (or fuel cells when available) making it ideal for those wh0  intend to travel long distances.

If you’re up for the physical challenge and have three buddies, the HumanCar can reach speeds of up to 30mph on a flat road, or up to 60mph downhill. Disc brakes bring it to a stop. Read more

Obama supports Mosque at Ground Zero

by Adnan Khan on August 16, 2010

in International

U.S. President Barack Obama says he supports a plan to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center in New York, near the scene of the deadly September 11, 2001 attacks. It was the first time the president has expressed his opinion about the intense controversy.

President Obama spoke Friday night at a White House Iftar dinner celebrating the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Despite widespread opposition to the plan, he said allowing the Islamic center to be built would reaffirm America’s religious freedom.

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. Read more
